Rd 5 - Bulldogs vs Dubbo Roos
14 May 2017 by James Horsburgh
Yesterday the Bulldogs went hunting Kangaroos as both clubs did battle for the Ken Laird trophy.
Lairdy, a life member and a previous president of both clubs found it difficult to separate the two with neither the club having a real challenge this year given the disparity between the top and the bottom of the Blowes cup competition.
Colts opened proceedings with a very physical game that saw the home team simply too strong on the day running out victors 22 to 13.
Bulldogs 3rd grade picked up where their colts had left off destroying Dubbo 63 points to 7 and in doing so proving that depth is not an issue for the Bathurst Rugby Club in season 2017.
With 20 minutes left to go in second grade one could’ve been fooled into thinking that it was going to be a one-sided affair all day, but to Dubbo’s credit they proved that rugby is an 80 minutes game fighting back to trail 13 – 12 with 90 seconds left to play.
Having scored almost 200 points in the first two games of the season, second-grade came to realise that discipline Is just as important as dedication, with Dubbo slotting a penalty goal with 30 seconds to play to run away victors in Dubbo’s only win of the day.
First grade was a torrid affair in the first half with the Bulldogs “talking the talk” that did nothing for the Dogs but allowing the Roos to “walk the walk”.
With a call to “shut it” from Sam Roberson at half time, the Bulldogs acceded to their Captain’s request and went on to show that it’s better to allow your rugby do the talking with Stalwart Scott Johnston stepping his way to the try line crossing just left of the uprights halfway through the second half.
The younger dogs then appeared to realise that they were still in the match with Adam Geal swooping on a loose pass to race 30 yards to cross only seconds after Johnston had scored previously.
From here on the game turned into a one sided affair and despite loosing comprehensively on the penalty count, the Bulldogs ran away with the game 30 -15.
Standouts in 1st grade were the old heads of Sam Roberson and Scott Johnston, whilst the much younger Brad Glasson was ever cool with the boot, kicking 6 from 7.
At the end of the day results were:
Colts XV Bulldogs 22 defeated Dubbo 13
3rd XV Bulldogs 63 defeated Dubbo 7
2nd XV Dubbo 15 defeated Bathurst 12
1st XV Bulldogs 30 defeated Dubbo 15
